Poker

In many ways the first decennium of the new millenium was the "Poker Decennium". It was first brought to light by Matt Damon and Edward Norton in the movie Rounders during the end of the 90's. That brought Texas Hold'Em to the attention of the masses and when they a few years later could watch the final tables of high stakes tournaments in their own living rooms, and follow the action and see the players hole cards, the poker boom had started to take it's first steps, thanks to the World Poker Tour (WPT).

It was at this time that online poker started to gather some serious interest and the interest would explode later on when the first amateur who had qualified through an online satellite won the biggest poker tournament of the year, the World Series of Poker Main Event (WSOP).

Suddenly poker was the hot topic. Almost every tv channel broadcasted some poker content, regular newspapers started to report news from the poker world and regular tv series and movies started to include poker or poker related content.

Learning to play poker

If you are a serious player, or have learned the basics and want to take the next step, and plan to deposit your own money you really want to get as much value as possible. Most online poker rooms offer deposit bonuses as incentives to make a deposit. That is a great way to earn rewards for your play as you are (hopefully) dominating at the tables.

The poker rooms make their money by collecting a small fee from every pot that is played in cash games and for every tournament that is played, that is called "rake". On a selected few poker rooms you can actually get a set percentage of that back through a rakeback deal. That means that every week, or month, you get back the set percentage of the rake you have contributed and if you are a serious player that can be an substantial amount.
